Still diving in
For most of the year, Dorothy Oster practices her diving in the community pool of Colfax, a small town in the foothills of the Sierras between Sacramento and Reno. But every summer, when Dorothy’s visiting her son Dr. Cyrus Oster, his wife Linda and their children Nathan and Jillian in Santa Cruz, she heads to the UC Santa Cruz swimming pool to perform jack-dives, hand-stands, reverse pikes and swan dives with a half-twist. Completing 50 dives a day, five days a week, might seem an unusual past-time for most 83-year-old women, but Oster’s not your average octogenarian; she won her first diving compeition at age 62. A vegan who still looks good in the bathing suit she made herself more than 50 years ago, Dorothy has no vices, according to her son, a dentist in Santa Cruz for the past 26 years.
