Picture Story -Homeless Teens
sthaler@santacruzsentinel.com
Randy, 15, gets out of the rain in a downtown Santa Cruz doorway with all of his earthly positions on the ground next to him in a duffle bag. Many homeless teens in Santa Cruz, like Randy, are totally on their own - either kicked out of their homes by drug-using parents or runaways whose families don't care to have them back.
Shorty, 13, carries a chip on his shoulder after escaping from a life of being a drug courier for his heroin-dealing mother.
Eve, 14, gets a meal at the River Street Shelter, surrounded by homeless adults.
Eve sneaks into the National Guard Armory to spend a dry night out of the rain. She arrived with a boyfriend and had to lie about her age to stay in the adults-only facility.
High on crank, Shorty confronts a homeless man on Pacific Avenue.
Eve has a smoke as she waits at the shelter for a meal.
Ryver, 17, walks the tracks to an uncertain future.
