Exquisitely stunning dahlia blooms entice most gardeners to begin dabbling, but soon, it rapidly escalates into a well-developed dahlia habit. Sharon Lucchesi, preoperation nurse and longtime gardener, innocently planted a couple of plants two years ago after attending a show. Today she tends 200. And commercial grower Kevin Larkin, of Corralitos Garden feel the time is right for dahlias to take center stage. Thousands of cultivars offer blooms in all the colors of the rainbow except blue, ranging from light pastels to deep jewel tones. Numerous small flowers combine, forming blooms which are classified as different types including orchid, waterlily and peony. To make things even more interesting, sizes range from the golf ball Mignon Singles measuring less than two inches up to dinner plate size Giants measuring over 10 inches.
