Since graduating from Aptos High School more than 25 years ago, James McNay Brumfield of Watsonville has spent most summers working in the Sierra as a wilderness guide and mule packer. His new novel, "Across the High Lonesome," draws on his experiences on the job and his knowledge - and love - of the mountains.

Sentinel surf columnist Gwen Mickelson took on the challenge of making her own surfboard, writing about the process in a surfboard-making series. Guiding her was Barry Barrett, manager of surfing and boating industry distributor Fiberglass Hawaii in Santa Cruz. Together, Barrett and Mickelson slowly crafted a fish-style board from scratch.
