UCSC Protests

UCSC student protesters run after being pepper-sprayed by University of California police Wednesday, October 18, 2006 as the students tried to storm a building where University of California Regents were meeting.

exactly what type of messsage is the UC sending our students by reacting to their protest by beating them with batons and using pepper spray on them? does the UC think this is going to make the students "behave" like good little boys and girls? The next demonstration will probably be worse; violence begets violence and right or wrong the university needs to examine other ways of dealing with this type of action, other than beating up the students who make our jobs possible. Maybe we tend to forget that in the heat of anger.

Let me just say that blocking exits, fighting with police, and destroying the property of others is not the way to gather public support. I was witness to this and protests in the past, GROW UP.

well, if scotty student has a better plan, let's hear it.

I see scotty student - I'm not quite sure what you mean when you say: grow up, but as a witness and not a participant it is easy enough to let others exact change on your behalf - this type of protest, along with a lot of hard work by the unions at the UC is why the STATE, and not the students, is paying for fee increases this year. Sitting back and being an observer is fine, but it is the activists like these students who make themselves heard, that cause the UC to sometimes make decisions that benefit staff, faculty and students.

I'm a UCSC alumni, majored in Earth Sciences. When I was on campus, we protested the Iraq invasion, but we never got out of hand like these guys. Frankly, I think these students were looking for any excuse to go crazy and cut class. Their time would've been better spent in class, I'm sure. Regardless of how much these kids misbehaved, I don't think pepper spraying them was warranted. Where are all the wealthy, top-notch attorney parents of some of these kids? If I was one of them, I'd cause an uproar.

This was not a violent protest, the aim was to make the uc regents listen to our plea for democracy and justice. The violence was not started by the students, I witnessed the outbreak of the violence first hand, and I have to say that the problem here is not student violence, but police brutality.

Honestly, when I saw this picture I laughed so hard. I don’t care about the politics of the University, because the UC system is simple, it is a corporation. Corporations have one goal…to make money. If you want to fight it, go to school somewhere else. Until then, enjoy the antics.

well, unless you plan on working in the service industry, the reality is you will find yourself working for one of these corporate entities - perhaps you will then be interested in their "politics".

scotty student obviously never learned how to read or write, let alone gather any courage or coherent thoughts to gather a response to those who previously questioned him.

actually... you see enough protests and you cant help wondering whether theyd be more effective if the people fought back instead of getting the shit beat out of them every time. the authorities and corporate media always try to portray peace activists as violent. i think demonstrating what revolutionary americans are actually capable of would be cathartic.
